Windshield Experts on Strong Glass Cleaners

Super clean, super clear, and super smooth – this is how car owners would like to keep their windshield and car windows. But at what expense?

This was the topic ng the quarterly assembly meeting of the California Windshield Technicians Association (CWTA). According to the CWTA it is important that their members could properly educate their clients about the impact of strong commercial windshield cleaners on their windshield, their health and wellness, and then in the environment. Ammonia for instance can be damaging to the health, and to glass surfaces. Autogeek.com has a web post on this. “Many glass cleaners contain ammonia, which is a great grease cutter but has some significant disadvantages when it comes to cars. Ammonia can release dangerous fumes that should not be inhaled, especially in enclosed areas like the inside of your vehicle. Chemically, ammonia acts to dry out plastic, rubber, vinyl, and leather.” Read more here.

Health experts explain, inhaling huge amounts of ammonia fumes can cause irritation on the eyes, nose, throat and even to the lungs. It can first manifest as coughing, until the irritation will persist. Power Window Wiki

As for its effect on the car, Medium.com came up with a web article detailing the impact of ammonia based window cleansers. “Affects car parts: The harsh chemical ammonia is known to dry out several materials like plastic and rubber among others. Over time, it can impact the car frame thus affecting the firm grip on the glass. In case of a collision, this can be extremely risky as the hold on the glass of the frame won’t be as strong. Further, damage to the car frame can be quite an expensive proposition for a car owner.” Read more here.

The CWTA adds, ammonia can also damage the film used on window tints. The usual chemical reaction observed is that it causes the tint to peel and causing discoloration. On the windshield itself, it can also cause glass streaks that are both unsightly and dangerous. Moreover, since this is a dangerous chemical, it can also harm the environment. Using it can definitely be counterproductive to the ecology once it makes its way to the water ways. According to Davidson, the best way to keep away from ammonia is to carefully read the ingredients in the label of your windshield cleaner.
